A scalpel I modelled as part of my university work for a first semester project. I decided to model several things from my room as an in-depth study.
I wanted to do a high-poly workflow and try to model as much detail as necessary to show off each and every curve/angle to the scalpel. When it came to the laser-etched text I made a very simplistic stencil of the text needed and then used Substance Designer to create a normal, AO and heightmap for them. I feel it turned out pretty great.
When it came to the metal I wanted to introduce some of the imperfections of my own scalpel and so made a normal and roughness map which shows some smudging of the steel’s stainless reflection as well as some light pockmarks along the surface from use.
For the project I used a standard workflow of modelling in 3DS Max from reference, Design for material creation, Painter for detail and then Photoshop for collation/any extra detail.
